AI Demands Release of EndSARS Protesters

Amnesty International (AI) has reacted to the recent release of nine #Endsars protesters who have been detained at Agodi Correctional Centre in Ibadan, Oyo State, southwest Nigeria, since October 2020.

In a statement on its official Twitter handle, AI welcomed the release of the protesters, while demanding further action on the other detained protesters nationwide.

AI wrote, ‘Amnesty International welcomes the release of nine persons detained at Agodi Correctional Centre Ibadan, Oyo state for participating in #EndSARS protests in October 2020’.

The rights body further urged the federal government to provide information on the status of other protesters who have been detained in several prisons across the country, and ensure their release.

It said after the investigations carried out in 2022, it was discovered that 40 #EndSARS protesters are still languishing in prisons across Nigeria.

It wrote, ‘In October last year our investigation shows that over 40 #EndSARS protesters are still languishing in prisons across Nigeria. Many #EndSARS protesters told Amnesty International that they were tortured while in detention.

‘The #EndSARS protesters released yesterday were detained for well over two years and three months without trial in Agodi Correctional Centre.

‘They were detained under trumped-up charges ranging from theft, arson, possession of unlawful firearms, and murder’.

It has been over two years after the #EndSARS protest and many arrested protesters are still languishing in prisons, while investigative panels set up to investigate impunity have failed to deliver justice to victims.
